Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday renamed Kanpur Airport as Ganesh Shanker Vidhyarthi, an Indian National Congress icon, a renowned freedom fighter and a journalist.
Vidhyarthi was born in Kanpur in 1890. He was Founder-Editor of revolutionary weekly Pratap. Impressed with Mahatma Gandhi and his fight against injustice he had joined INC in 1916. A was also closely associated with famous freedom fighters Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad. He had translated Victor Hugo epic novel Ninety Three.
A decision to rename Kanpur Airport after him was taken on Saturday at Yogi Cabinet meeting. Bareilly Airport was also re-christened as Nath Nagari Airport. The Yogi Cabinet also approved new policy for re-opening old cinema halls across state. There are about 724 cinema halls which closed down in the last few years.
