Pilot blinded by laser averts crash

New Delhi: A disaster was averted during the early hours of Wednesday when an Air India pilot's view was obstructed by a sharp laser beam during a Bengaluru-Delhi flight's landing at Delhi airport.

The pilot immediately reported the matter to the Airport Operation Control Centre (AOCC), which in turn alerted the Air traffic control (ATC) and the airport operator. The flight, however, landed safely on the scheduled runway.

ATC officials say laser beams from nearby farmhouses, which host parties, weddings and other functions, have become a security scare at the airport.

At around 12.35 am, a CISF inspector at Terminal 3 received a call from the AOCC that pilot Nishant Kumar of flight AI-173 has encountered a laser beam about eight nautical miles from the airport. The officer immediately informed the police. "We have begun investigations and a case under relevant sections has been registered," a police officer said.
