Pune: While Pune’s sole airport is already under the ‘hypersensitive’ category, thanks to its close proximity to the defence establishment in Lohegaon, the authorities are now looking at enhancing security on the civilian side of the premises, too.
A new proposal is in the works with the Central civil aviation ministry, mooting the deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to protect areas immediately outside the Pune International Airport. This ‘city side’ is currently managed by the local traffic police department, which invigilates the outside area and the roads leading to the facility.
Currently, there are very few airports in the country — including Delhi and Mumbai airports — where the CISF has been deployed to also guard the city side part of the facility due to its hypersensitivity.
Now, within the next few months, if things go as planned, CISF personnel may take over the city side of Pune airport — where the busy main entry and exit gates stand — as also the surrounding circulating area.
Uday Moray, the Union civil aviation ministry spokesman, confirmed to Mirror, “There are already CISF guards deployed on the city side portions of some Indian airports. There is an internal proposal being considered to add a few more airports to this list, for additional CISF security on their outside sections. This includes Pune airport, too. After a final decision is taken on this issue at the ministry level, things will go forward.”
