AAI planning international cargo facility at Coimbatore airport

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to have a world-class international cargo facility in Coimbatore to tap the export cargo business in a year.
Inaugurating a new 1500square metre domestic cargo terminal at Chennai airport on Friday, AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra export cargo from Coimbatore - which is a manufacturing hub -- is being routed through Kochi. "We want to capture that business. The facility should be built in a year. The airport is doing good in cargo but we want to expand international cargo."
Mohapatra said AAI was planning a tremendous push in cargo business and Chennai has done well in volumes. "Rs 186crore worth cargo was handled which is a 27% increase when compared to last year," he said.
Chennai airport will get three more domestic cargo terminals next year. The new terminals are being built so that the entire cargo operations can be moved out of the old airport building. The airport handles around 90,000tons of cargo.
