Domestic air cargo services from September

Vijayawada: The much-awaited cargo service from the Vijayawada airport are all set to start from September. The authorities of the airport at Gannavaram near here have readied the terminal to handle the service.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has awarded the contract to handle the cargo to Shreepa logistics Pvt. Ltd . The firm will pay the rent for the terminal for the first two years and share the revenues with the AAI from the third year.

It has to obtain clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India (BCSI). Also, it has to install x-ray scanning machines which are being imported, airport sources say.

The airport will initially handle domestic cargo as no international flights are operated from here. Three airlines — Air India, SpiceJet and Trujet — are operating flights to various destinations including Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Three airbuses, including two to Delhi and one to Hyderabad, and Bombardier Q 400 series flight by SpiceJet are also operated, sources say.
