Port Blair: Many incoming and outgoing flights were delayed on Friday after a chink was detected on the runway of the Veer Savarkar International Airport here. According to reports, the authorities noticed the crack on the runway last night and immediate repair works were ordered. But owing to inclement weather, the runway could not be brought into operation till 10.30 am on Friday following which airborne planes were diverted by the ATC (Air Traffic Control) and outbound passengers had to wait for many hours to board for their destinations.
Speaking to this Correspondent, the Airport Director informed that normal airport operations resumed after 11 am today. “During this turbulent weather, there is possibility of damage being caused to the runway. Even a minor lapse could cause a serious tragedy.
