Extension of metro to airport later, says CM

Kochi: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Monday that extending the Kochi metro to Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) at Nedumbassery could be considered only at a later stage. “Let the first phase be complete and then the government can think of extending the service to the airport,” said the Chief Minister, who is also the Chairman of CIAL, at its 23rd annual general meeting.

The demand for extending the metro rail service to the airport was raised by some of the shareholders who spoke at the meeting. The demands raised by the small shareholders included launch of the proposed Kerala Airways as well as a passenger shipping service under the aegis of CIAL. They also demanded special treatment for the shareholders, which, the Chief Minister said, might not be considered because of the practical difficulties involved and security factors.

CIAL has had a good 2016-17 with the airport company along with its subsidiary Cochin Dutyfree and Retail Services making a turnover of Rs. 669 crore. Of this, CIAL made a profit of Rs. 179.45 crore. The airport also handled a total of 89.4 lakh passengers during the last financial year. The number of passengers grew 15.06 per cent during the year.
