No underpass to airport as IAF cites security concerns

Chandigarh: In a crucial move, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has rejected the combined proposal of Chandigarh and Haryana to allow them to construct a separate underpass to cut the time taken to reach the Chandigarh International Airport at Mohali, citing security concerns as it would be near the airstrip.
The proposal could have given respite to a number of passengers from Chandigarh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, who have to currently take a long route to reach the airport. Sources said the rejection came from the IAF as the airport complex is situated adjoining the proposed sites planned for the underpass.
"We had planned two routes for the project, one from the old Chandigarh airport side and one from the road leading to Mohali from sector 29/Industrial Area rotary side. But the IAF has now denied the proposal. Currently, there is no other concrete proposal in this regard. We will see what else can be done in this regard to shorten the distance," said a senior official of the UT.
According to sources in the UT administration, 60% to 70% air traffic comes from Chandigarh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh to the airport. "Besides, a large number of tourists regularly visit these places and they have to pass through the same route to reach the airport," sources said.
