1.16 kg gold worth Rs 32 lakh seized at Dabolim airport

Vasco: The Air Intelligence Unit of Goa Customs at Dabolim International Airport, on Sunday, detained an international air passenger for trying to smuggle in 1.16 kilogramme of gold in raw form valued at around Rs 32 lakh while he was travelling to Bengaluru from Dubai via Goa by Air India flight (AI 994).
As per available information from the sources in AIU, the search of the Air India flight at Dabolim airport on Sunday led to the recovery of 10 gold bars weighing 1.16 kilogramme which were found in the aircraft’s toilet.
The AIU officials caught the passenger on the basis of intelligence developed by them.
“The gold bars were covered with balloons. On suspicion, an international transit passenger, Indian national, was interrogated and on his personal search few balloons identical to the ones covering the gold bars and a gel bottle were recovered from him,” said the AIU officials.
“It was disclosed that upon questioning, the passenger accepted that the gold bars belonged to him,” said the officials and further maintained that the said gold was seized under the provisions of Customs Act 1962.
