AAI suspends two officials, transfers 1

Ahmedabad: Two officials of Ahmedabad airport have been suspended and one transferred after the runway was damaged following heavy rains. Potholes on the runway had resulted in suspension of flight operations thrice during monsoon until they were temporarily repaired. Airport Authority of India had carried out a vigilance inquiry to find out if there was negligence in construction of the runway. Confirming action against three officials at Ahmedabad airport, AAI Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said, “Two officials have been suspended and one transferred from Ahmedabad on finding poor quality of supervision. The agency is doing the repair work properly now. Work is currently on and should be over within a month.”
The runway at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport was nonoperational thrice during the monsoon after potholes were found on it. AAI officials carried out temporary repair work and the runway was made operational. However, questions were raised on the poor quality of runway construction after potholes were found. Top officials of AAI initiated a vigilance inquiry to find out if there were any loopholes in construction of the runway.
