Elevated Metro 2B may make landing at Juhu airport tough

Mumbai: The government may have to sidestep its own safety rules for the proposed Metro 2B next to Juhu airport as the blueprint for the elevated transport project is not in consonance with height restrictions near runways.
Metro 2B, which is to connect D N Nagar in Andheri and Mankhurd, shall pass under the approach path of landing aircraft on the SV Road leg of its route. Under the current plan, the rail with its overhead high-voltage cable line at 17.9 metres will be taller than even the buildings that border S V Road.
Though these buildings stand farther away from the Juhu runway than the proposed Metro 2B, one of these structures was recently denied permission to increase its height.
The metro viaduct will be at a distance of about 90 metres from the starting point of Main Runway 26 at Juhu airport in Vile Parle (west).
An MMRDA spokesperson said they had applied for an NOC from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). "We will get it, that's not a problem as it is between two government organizations," the spokesperson said.
