Thiruvananthapuram: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has asked the district administration to cut down around 10 trees that come in the airport's Obstruction Limitation Surface.
The tall trees that may face the axe are in the Veli side of the approach zone (14) of the runway. The airport authority made the request since the trees have been posing a threat to aircraft.
There is, however, no OLS issue in the Vallakkadavu side. OLS is a series of surfaces that set the height limits of objects around an airport.
The tree protection council, meanwhile, has given its nod to prune trees that come in the OLS, even though the airport wants them to be felled.
The tree protection committee conducted an assessment, and gave AAI the permission to prune trees threatening flight safety," V K Prasanth, head of the committee, said.
