Gold worth Rs 20 lakh seized at Chennai airport

Chennai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai airport customs seized 680gm of gold worth Rs 20 lakh on Tuesday morning.
A passenger named Chotapeer Mulla arrived from Riyadh via Colombo on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight. He was questioned by customs due to his 'suspicious' behaviour.
When his baggage was checked, gold ingot of 24 carat purity weighing 680 gm was found concealed inside a GEEPAS coffee grinder in place of its motor assembly.
On Saturday, customs detected a case of smuggling of Indian currency Rs 1.22 lakh which was wrapped in a newspaper and concealed inside hand luggage by a passenger named Jainullanbudeen Mohammed Abubacker bound to Singapore on an Air India flight.
