Gold worth Rs 97 lakh seized at Kochi airport

Kochi: The Air Intelligence Unit at the Cochin International Airport, Nedumbassery, has seized 3.18 kg of gold worth `97.77 lakh, in three separate incidents on Sunday.

According to the officers, the first seizure was made from a Malappuram native who arrived by Saudi Airlines from Jeddah. He was carrying a speaker woofer system having two transformers it. In one of the transformers, gold shaped into wire rolls were concealed by winding them into it. He was also carrying two gold biscuits.

In another case, a native of Bhatkal in Karnataka, who arrived from Dubai in Jet Airways flight, was intercepted at the exit gate of the arrival hall by air intelligence officers. On a thorough search, four gold biscuits concealed under his feet with adhesive tapes - two biscuits in each foot - were recovered.
In the third incident, the officers seized gold from a Palakkad native who arrived in Air Arabia flight. Gold in granular form was concealed inside the top portion of the lid of the perfume bottles he was carrying.
Two persons have been arrested in this connection and cases have been registered under the Customs Act 1961. A follow-up investigation is under way.
