Inline scanners to ease check-in at airport domestic terminal

Chennai: Passengers travelling out of the domestic terminal of the Chennai International Airport will be able to undergo a hassle-free check-in without scanning their bags at standalone baggage scanners by next year as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to install modern multi-level inline scanners.
The new machines with CT X-ray and CT scan systems equipped to detect explosives are expected to be procured by the end of the year and installed in March 2018. Tenders will be awarded soon. The international terminal of the airport already has an inline baggage system.
A senior AAI official said, "The machines will have multi-level screening of which the first level will be for explosive detection. The CT scans will provide a good resolution picture of the bags and if anything suspicious is found, the bag will be automatically diverted to a checking area." The new high-resolution imaging is being introduced as per the new security regulations notified by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security
