Mumbai: Prepaid taxis at airports and railway stations were said to be the answer to prevent passengers from being fleeced by cabbies. But the four-member Khatua Committee has come across malpractices at airports where prepaid black and yellow taxis operate.
The members in their report have stated that due to high incentives the drivers earn over and above the fares, there are unscrupulous elements who palm off an amount to drivers in queue and jump the queue. These incidents have been mostly found to occur at the international airport. Sources said that these elements need not be drivers who operate taxis.
"The drivers take undue advantage of the high incentives. The serial number of the drivers standing in the queue is transferred at a price to immediately book themselves," states the Khatua Committee report. These unscrupulous elements are simply 'rent seekers' who don't practice driving but take money from drivers to put them ahead in the queue.
