‘Resign if you can’t give us an international airport’

Surat: It was in July 2011 that local BJP leaders, including MPs and MLAs, had organized a protest event at the airport to demand increased domestic and international connectivity. The BJP-sponsored protest had seen a large presence of people from trade and industry.
Seven years down the line, the domestic air connectivity, though has increased from just one flight to 18 flights, the tall claims of BJP leaders in getting international airport to the city have failed to materialize despite there being BJP-led government at the Centre.
Airport activists and citizens have flooded social media with the request asking BJP leaders to again hold a protest and tender their resignation over international air connectivity issue. The message, which has gone viral on social media, including Facebook and Twitter, states that it is time for MPs and MLAs from the Diamond City to get united and tender their resignation for want of international airport facilities.
World-class railway station, international airport, Dumas beach development, an engineering college, DRM office at Surat railway station, Surat-Navsari twin city etc. were among the many projects announced in the city, but are yet to see the light of the day.
Airport activists were irked a few days ago when the banners announcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the ground breaking event of Rajkot international airport at Hirasar were put up at the airport building here.
