Airport security to be disabled-friendly

Chennai: Airport security screening has become disabled-friendly as security personnel have begun using handheld detectors to screen passengers who come in wheelchairs and those who use prosthetics.
Sources said that instructions on the methods to screen disabled passengers were sent to the airport last month and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have been trained to use handheld explosive trace detectors.
This will save disabled passengers the inconvenience of being made to step out of their wheelchairs and remove their prosthetics for going through the door-frame metal detector at security checks after check in.
CISF personnel will be trained further when a standard procedure for the new screening is prepared.
A senior official said, "CISF headquarters forwarded instructions to all airports saying that disabled passengers can be told to step out of their wheelchairs only in case of a serious doubt after screening with handheld device."
