Gold worth Rs 11 lakh and US$7000 seized from passengers at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport have seized 366gm of gold, worth Rs 11 lakh, and US$7000 (Rs 4.5 lakh) from three passengers in the last two days.
On Monday, a passenger named Nazeer Mohammed, 44, was intercepted after he arrived here from Dubai on an Emirates flight. Two crude gold chains of 24 karat purity, weighing 289gm and worth Rs 8.5 lakh, were recovered from the pockets of his pants.
On Monday night, US$7000 was seized from Samsuddin, 26, who was bound for Singapore via Colombo on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight. The notes, covered in a polythene bag, were found concealed inside his rectum.
On Tuesday morning, three gold bits and one gold chain, totally weighing 77gm and worth Rs 2.3 lakh, were recovered from a passenger, Jahir Hussain Kather Maitheen, 38, who was bound for Colombo on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight. They were concealed inside his rectum.
