Kovai airport expansion will boost western dists’ economy: Industrialists

Tirupur: The knitwear industrialists in Tirupur are optimistic about the steps taken by both the central and state governments to speed up the expansion of Coimbatore airport.
Recently, the governments had decided to form a special committee to acquire land for the expansion work.
The industrialists on Tuesday urged the governments maintain the momentum as a revamped airport would help the industry-rich western districts to realise their real potential economic growth.
With Rs 26,000 crore turnover from exports alone, the knitwear industry is dependent on foreign countries such as China and Hong Kong for more than 80% of garment accessories. "More than Rs 1,000 crore accessories are imported annually. And presently, the industrialists mainly depend on Chennai and Bengaluru airports as Coimbatore airport lacks better international connectivity and also adequate infrastructure to handle wide-body aircrafts," said Raja M Shanmugam, president of Tirupur Exporters' Association.
