Mopa samiti slams govt for felling trees at airport site

Panjim: Mopa Vimantal Pidit Xetkari Samiti (MVPXS) on Saturday slammed the State government for continuing the tree felling despite orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to terminate the process.
Addressing the media, MVPXS Secretary Sandeep Kambli said, “Despite the orders of the NGT, the State government, along with the firm, has opted to continue with the tree felling, thereby displaying an act of antagonism. Also, Forest Department arrived on the scene where the tree felling had started after the order of NGT, they made a report of the incident, which is still undisclosed.”
He added, “It was anticipated that the tree cutting would halt after the visit by the forest officers. But the very next day, the construction firm returned to the site along with the police protection and began to dig out the roots of the trees which were cut previously, in an attempt to conceal the act of tree cutting that they had initiated which indicated that Forest Department assisted the firm in concealing of the evidence.”
He further said that the firm also demolished two houses within the area without issuing prior notice to the owners, who possess registration numbers and amenities such as electricity, water for their houses. He also said that the local MLA Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar led the media into thinking that the government is working in an undisturbed order by stating that the demolished houses were illegal and that they were built after the acquisition process was said to have started.
