429 fliers stranded in Calcutta airport

Dum Dum: More than 400 foreigners were stranded at Calcutta airport for over 20 hours on Wednesday.

The reason: fog forced their flights to be diverted from Dhaka and by the time visibility improved, the pilots had reached their flight duty time limit.

Airport officials said 429 passengers of Saudi Arabian Airlines or Saudia and Gulf Air were stuck at the airport's security hold.

A Boeing 777 of Saudia with 276 passengers on board from Jeddah to Dhaka was diverted to Calcutta around 2am.

The Gulf Air flight from Bahrain to Dhaka, an Airbus A 330, with 156 passengers on board landed in the city around 4.30am.

Both the aircraft could not land in Dhaka because fog had resulted in poor visibility, an airport official said.

The visibility at Dhaka improved around 7am but by then the pilots of both flights had reached their flight duty time limits, the official said.
