Gold worth Rs 30 lakh seized at Cial

Kochi: Air-intelligence unit of the customs department foiled four attempts to smuggle in gold to the state over the past two days at the Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial). The team seized gold worth Rs 30 lakh in separate seizures.
The customs sleuths on Thursday recorded two cases of smuggling. Gold worth Rs. 18.36 lakh weighing 680g was seized from two passengers who landed at Cial from Dubai and Jeddah, said customs officers. The gold was concealed in the innerwear of the passengers, who were both natives of Kozhikode district.
Officials said that a similar modus operandi was followed by two other passengers who arrived here from Abu Dhabi and Jeddah on Friday as well. Accused had hidden gold worth Rs 11.7 lakh in their innerwear.
Customs commissioner Sumit Kumar said that the number of small-scale smuggling, gold which was valued under Rs 30 lakh, was on the rise.
"Most smugglers are keeping the quantity law considering the stringent law for smuggling in large quantities. Through proper monitoring and stringent measures, we are able to seize even minuscule quantities of gold," said the commissioner.
