Gold worth Rs 35L seized at airport, 1 held

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai international airport seized 1.2kg of gold worth Rs 35 lakh in two separate incidents.
On Monday, while on surveillance duty near the baggage conveyor belt area in the arrival hall, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) found two bags left unattended. They bore the name of the passenger, Ameen Shahul Hameed, who had arrived at Chennai from Bangkok.
Officials found 12 gold cut bits weighing a total of 399 grams valued at Rs 11 lakh concealed in tins. Nobody claimed the baggage.
In another incident on Friday, Shaik Nazeer Ahammed, who arrived from Riyadh to Chennai via Bahrain, was intercepted by Customs Air Intelligence unit who found a decorative flower show-piecewith seven gold bars concealed in it.
