Chennai: Rising demand for aircraft parking space at the congested Chennai airport may benefit smaller airports in the state like those in Coimbatore, Madurai or Trichy. Airlines may choose these airports to park their flights at night as there is a shortage of space at Chennai airport.
This will also mean that passengers may get more latenight flights from metros to Coimbatore and Madurai and early-morning flights out of tier 2 and tier 3 cities to Chennai, Bengaluru and other metros. Demand for aircraft parking space is set to go up as the regional connectivity scheme is likely to take off in the coming months, and low-cost and full service carriers have already announced plans to operate flights on their own connecting tier 2 and tier 3 destinations with metro cities.
As Chennai airport does not have space to park more planes, Airports Authority of India (AAI) is considering the creation of parking stands at Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai and also using Puducherry for night parking. Jaipur is already popular for parking planes because the space is less at Delhi airport. A senior official of AAI said, "When ground infrastructure improves, airlines are expected to park their planes at these airports and start late-night and early-morning services to Chennai and other towns. There is going to be demand for parking space in Chennai. We have remote bays for night parking near the second runway but it may be inconvenient for airlines to take the planes out for morning services. It may make more sense for airlines to park at smaller airports and fly down to Chennai in the morning as a scheduled service."
Airlines have already weaved in red eye domestic flights into their schedules to fly their planes to airports for night parking. AAI has asked the state government to acquire land to expand airport facilities at Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai. "The plan is to create more parking space at Coimbatore and Trichy."
