Dum Dum: The domestic section of Calcutta airport is set to have inline baggage scanning by Puja, more than two years after such a system was installed in the international wing.
Once the facility is introduced, passengers in the domestic section will no longer have to stand in a seperate queue to get their registered luggage scanned before checking in. During the morning and evening rush hours, a passenger often has to spend more than 10 minutes in a queue in front of an X-ray machine.
The machines for inline baggage X-ray will be installed by June and are set to be operational by the end of September or early October after several rounds of trial, officials at the airport said on Monday.
Inline baggage scanning was introduced in the international section in mid-2016, more than three years after the integrated terminal of the city airport was unveiled. "Along with installing the system in the domestic section, we will replace the scanning machines in the international wing," an Airports Authority of India official in Delhi said.
"The machines in the international section are old and need to be replaced. The new machines will produce better images."
Sources said the machines would be imported from Germany.
Calcutta and Chennai airports will be among the 23 airports across the country where the system will be installed in this phase.
Calcutta will have eight machines, five of them in the domestic section. Chennai will have four and at least two of them are likely to be installed by February.
"We have already issued work order for the 23 airports and the machines are in the process of being installed in phases," AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra told Metro on Monday.
Sources at the Calcutta airport said the domestic section needed inline baggage scanning more than the international section.
Around 27,000 passengers flew out of the domestic section on Monday, compared with the 4,000-odd who took international flights.
