Bagdogra: traffic soars, fliers sore

Siliguri: Passenger traffic continues to increase exponentially in Bagdogra and is likely to touch the two million mark at the end of the current fiscal, according to officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

In the past nine months of the current financial year, there has been a rise of 53 per cent in traffic, pushing the passenger tally past the number for the entire 2016-17.

"It is, indeed, a significant rise. While over 15 lakh passengers had travelled in the last fiscal, over 16 lakh have already travelled in the first nine months of the current fiscal, that is, till December 2017," Rakesh Sahay, airport director, Bagdogra, said on Wednesday.

The unprecedented growth rate in passenger movement has made AAI officials draw a projection on the number of passengers till the end of this fiscal, that is, till March.

"If the current rate (of above 50 per cent rise) continues, the estimated number of passengers will be over 23 lakh. It will be above 20 lakh even if the growth declines to 20 per cent in the last quarter (from January to March). We are confident that for the first time, the number of passengers here will cross the two-million mark," said an official.

In Bagdogra, there are at least 22 arrivals and 22 departures every day.

"On an average, 6,500 passengers move through the airport every day," said a source in AAI.
