Chennai: Travelling to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur might be a cheaper option rather than taking a flight to Madurai, Turicorin and Trichy as flight fares for these three cities have reached the pinnacle now!
According to media reports, high prices of flight tickets can be attributed to high demand for flight seats owing to the upcoming Pongal festival. Moreover, the government’s call to shut schools and colleges on January 12 and the ongoing bus strike has influenced the air fares.
So, travellers willing to take the Chennai-Madurai route (one way) have to shell out 9,000- 17,000 if they intent. For travelling to Tuticorin and Trichy (one way) on January 12 and 13, be ready to spend INR 19,000 and INR 20,000 respectively.
Apparently, the fare hike is against the directives given by the Director General of Civil Aviation rules which prohibits unreasonable hike in ticket prices.
A lot of people from Madurai, Trichy and Turicorin earn their livelihood in Chennai, therefore, air fares go up during Diwali and Pongal due to heavy traffic. One of the reasons why air fares rise is, reportedly, because of the ongoing holiday season and a lot of flight seats have been booked beforehand.
