Decks cleared for Aero City at Indore airport

Indore: Friday proved lucky for city airport as decks were cleared for development of an aero city, equipped with convention centre, budget hotel and green landscape, on 28 acres that would soon be handed over to Airport Authority of India (AAI) by district administration.

AAI Chairman Dr. Guruprasad Mohapatra met Lok Sabha Speaker and Indore MP Sumitra Mahajan at her residence in New Delhi and made a presentation on future development plan of city airport. Collector Nishant Warwade, AAI’s executive director (architecture) S Biswas, airport director Aryama Sanya and principal secretary to Lok Sabha Speaker Sunil Tated too were present in the meeting.

The Speaker okayed the plan after incorporating a few suggestions and directed Collector Warwade to send proposal regarding transfer of 28-acre to state government at the earliest.

Explaining the future plan for city airport, AAI chairman said that the project would be executed in two phases. In the first phase, an aero city would be developed at the airport on the lines of Delhi airport. The aero city will boast of convention centre, budget hotel, there will be two entry and two exit gates along with multi-level parking. This will enable AAI to generate non-aeronautical revenue, he said. Currently, non-aeronautical revenue accounts for 15 to 20% of the total revenue. In developed countries, its contribution stands at 40 to 50% of the revenue. Rise in non-aeronautical revenue will enable AAI reduce airport facility and handling charges currently levied on passengers, said Dr Mohapatra.

In the second phase, a lush green landscape would be developed opposite new terminal building adjacent to road leading to Bijasan Mata Temple near airport boundary wall. Display boards would be put up at the airport highlighting historical importance and present achievements of the city. A huge statue of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar would come up opposite main airport building.
