Early commissioning of the Kannur international airport, the second greenfield airport in the public-private partnership mode in the State near Mattannur, is on the cards with a roadmap to commence commercial flight operations in June in place.
Kannur International Airport Ltd. (KIAL), the special purpose vehicle for executing the ₹2,292-crore project, has chalked out plans to complete the remaining work in four months and get all licences by May 31 to begin flight operations. A calibration Dornier aircraft of the Airports Authority of India will do calibration of Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range (DVOR), a ground-based radio navigational aid that provides information to aircraft to define air traffic control routes for the en route, terminal, and instrument approach/ departure procedures.
Only after obtaining the calibration certificate can the Director General of Civil Aviation carry out inspection and the calibration for aerodrome licence. This will be followed by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security’s inspection for security clearance. KIAL managing director P. Bala Kiran said interior decoration works were under way at the 10,33,000 sq ft integrated passenger terminal building and commercial operations were planned for June.
“The 21,000 sq ft Air Traffic Control (ATC) and a 750-m flyover had been completed. The installation of the Common User Passenger Processing System (CUPPS) at the 48 check-in counters was on. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is providing the hardware for the immigration services and the airlines will be provided offices and commercial spaces at the terminal next month,” he said. The Customs had already notified the Kannur airport and posted 78 personnel. Steps were on to declare the airport as an authorised immigration checkpoint, sources added.
