Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport seized 3.8 kg of gold bars, worth Rs 1.16 crore, from a passenger who arrived here from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia on a Kuwait Airlines flight on Monday morning. The passenger, Rafi Syed, 43, who holds an Indian passport, brought the gold bars concealed in a plastic pouch containing dates.
Customs officials intercepted Syed at the exit point of the arrival hall and checked him. They found 39 gold bars concealed in a pouch -- 37 of them weighing 100gm each and two bars weighing 50gm each.
