Gold worth Rs 54 lakh seized from two passengers at Chennai airport

Chennai:  Customs officials seized 1.8kg of gold, worth Rs 54 lakh, from two passengers at Chennai airport on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, Mohammed Afzal Alibapu, 26, who arrived here from Dubai on an Air India flight, was intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall. When he was checked, an air cooler marked 'Nobel' was recovered.
It was found that the motor of the cooler was glued to the rotating fan. The motor was separated from the rotating fan. When it was broken, 21 silver round metal sheets were found. When the sheets were heated with acid, 669gm of gold, worth Rs 19.7 lakh, was found.
On Tuesday evening, Rafeeque Rahim, 28, who arrived here from Riyadh on a Saudi Airlines flight, was found to be carrying two packets wrapped in brown adhesive tape. Four rectangular gold bars weighing 1.149kg, worth Rs 34 lakh, were seized from him. He was arrested.
