Gold worth Rs 90 lakh seized at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport detected six cases of gold smuggling from Thursday to Sunday and arrested two passengers. They seized a total of three kilogram of gold, worth Rs 90 lakh.
On Sunday morning, Cheriya Parambath Ansar, 26, arrived here from Dubai on an Emirates flight. When his check-in baggage was examined, gold foils of 24 karat purity weighing 829 gm, worth Rs 25 lakh, were recovered. They were concealed in layers of magnetic dart-board, photo frame and card board sheets. The passenger was arrested.
On Sunday, two women -- Ummal Bajria, 69, and Halima Nachiya, 47 -- arrived from Dubai on an Air India flight. While one was carrying 10 gold bangles, a gold necklace and a gold long dollar chain, weighting 492 gm, the other woman was carrying 12 gold bangles, a gold hip chain and a gold long dollar chain weighing 488 gm. Both had concealed the jewellery under their burkha. The total worth of the gold seized from them was Rs 28 lakh.
On Sunday again, Sivaiah Kokkanti, 44, brought one gold kada and one gold cut bit weighing 333.8 gm -- worth Rs 10 lakh -- concealed in his trouser pocket.
On Friday, Barakathnisa Shamsudden, 37, was found carrying 379 gm of gold worth Rs 11.4 lakh under her burkha. She came from Bangkok on an AirAsia flight.
