IndiGo sets its sights on Sri Lanka

IndiGo has now added Sri Lanka to its route map, starting services to Colombo (CMB) on 20 January from Bengaluru (BLR) and Chennai (MAA). Commenting on the launch, Sanjay Kumar, CCO of IndiGo, said: “It gives us immense pleasure to add Colombo to our growing network, which will not only help us cater to the growing tourist potential of the city, but also provide affordable travel options to the Indian workforce who can now look forward to visiting the city more frequently.” Adding to Kumar’s words, Malinga Arsakularatne, MD of Hemas Leisure Travel Aviation Group, stated: “We welcome IndiGo to Sri Lanka and it is indeed our great pleasure to embark on this exciting partnership. We are confident that the team at Hemas Aviation would deliver the growth ambitions of the airline. We look forward to a long-lasting and a win-win relationship with IndiGo.” The 710-kilometre sector from Bengaluru and 647-kilometre link from Chennai will both be operated by the airline’s fleet of A320s. Services from former Indian city will be flown daily, while the latter sees a twice-daily rotation. Both services to Sri Lanka’s largest city will face stiff competition, with the Bengaluru sector already being operated by SriLankan Airlines and Jet Airways, with the duo offering 21 weekly flights between them. Chennai is currently served by SriLankan Airlines, Air India and Spicejet with a combined 49 weekly departures.
