Land acquisition for Tiruchi airport on course: Collector

Tiruchi: The land acquisition process for the expansion of the Tiruchi airport was progressing swiftly, District Collector K. Rajamani said here on Thursday.

The process of acquiring about 345.62 acres of land, including wet lands, for the expansion project began recently after the State government granted administrative sanction. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had sought about 683.32 acres of land, which included around 337.70 acres of Defence land. The process of getting the Defence land is under way separately. Recently, the district administration started issuing notices to property owners whose lands are to be acquired amidst stiff resistance from a section of residents.

In an informal chat with reporters at Manachanallur near here, Mr.Rajamani said land acquisition work was well on course and the district administration would be able to hand over the land to AAI by the time they begin the project.

Referring to the other pending projects in the district, Mr.Rajamani said environmental clearance for the revised alignment of the by-pass road between Panchapur and Jeeyapuram was being awaited.

Mr. Rajamani, who inspected the progress of construction of the new minor bridges across irrigation canals at Manachanallur, said the bridges being built across the Pullampadi and Peruvalai canals would be thrown open to traffic on February 1.

“The construction was originally scheduled to be completed by January 15, but due to the release of water there was some delay. The bridges will be completed by January 31, he said.

The new bridges are being built in place of the old narrow ones, which have since been demolished. The Highways Department took up the construction of the two bridges, adjoining each other at the entrance of Manachanallur town, at a cost of ?2.70 crore.
