Sonari flight plan delayed

Jamshedpur: An ambitious plan to launch flight services between Sonari Airport in the steel city and Calcutta from January 23 has been deferred till further notice.

Sources in Air Deccan, the private operator that was supposed to give Jamshedpur its wings once more, have revealed that delay on part of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport authorities in allotting flight slots and parking bays for smaller aircraft is behind the postponed launch.

"We had requested flight slots and parking bays at Calcutta airport. We are hoping to receive a positive communiqué in a day or two after which a fresh date will be announced," a senior operations official of the airline told this newspaper on Monday.
Union minister of state for civil aviation and Hazaribagh MP Jayant Sinha had, during his visit here on January 9, admitted delay in starting flight operations between Jamshedpur and Calcutta. Air Deccan, which had won the bid for the route under the Centre's UDAN scheme, was given a deadline of February 15.

Airline officials pointed to another poser.

"Officials (in Calcutta) are reluctant to give us (flight) slots because small planes are exempt from hefty fees and, therefore, do not bring revenue to the airport," said an Air Deccan employee, requesting anonymity.
