The ministry of civil aviation on Wednesday announced 17 successful bidders including largest domestic carrier IndiGo for proposals to connect 78 new airports under the second round of government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme-UDAN. Interglobe Aviation Ltd, operating IndiGo Airlines, successfully bid for 20 routes in states like Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra while Jet Airways India Ltd won four routes. Both carriers did not participate in the first round of UDAN scheme. IndiGo had announced plans to buy 50 ATR 72-600 aircraft recently. Meanwhile, low-cost carrier SpiceJet was successful in winning 17 routes in Karnataka, Maharashtra and others in round two of the bidding. A total of 78 airports including 29 unserved and 13 underserved airports will be connected with UDAN 2. Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir is among the new routes to be connected to capital Srinagar through a fixed wing flight after Maritime Energy Heli Air Services (MEHAIR) placed a successful bid for it.
For the first time, the 90 proposals awarded include 23 helicopter routes with Pawan Hans Ltd bagging routes in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Manipur. The other successful helicopter operations bidder include Heritage Aviation, Skyone Airways, Heritage Aviation and Heligo Charters Private Ltd. “The problem of connecting difficult terrains has been solved with helicopter companies winning bids,” minister of civil aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju said. The airlines will have six months time period to commence flights on these routes.
