Was Shashi Tharoor detained at airport for travelling with pistol to Jaipur Literature Festival?

Several media outlets on Thursday evening reported that Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was detained at the Jaipur airport after he was allegedly found possessing a pistol while on his way to the Jaipur Literature Festival.

News channel Aaj Tak reported that Tharoor was detained for 35 minuted by the security personnel at the airport after he was found to be carrying his ‘licenced pistol.’
Hindi newspaper Jagran reported that Tharoor was detained at the airport since he ‘had not informed the security officials’ about his pistol. The website added that he was grilled for 45 minutes at the airport.

The same story was reported by Firstpost Hindi (with headline ‘Shocking: Congress MP caught with pistol’), Amar Ujala (with headline ‘Shashi Tharoor arrived with pistol, held at the airport’) and other smaller websites among others.

However, a flash by news agency ANI said that there was no truth in the media reports on either Tharoor carrying a pistol or his detention. Quoting Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) sources, ANI reported, “Shashi Tharoor wasn’t detained for possession of pistol at Jaipur airport. He was waiting for his sister. Someone asked him what he was waiting for,he said ‘my sister’, misheard as ‘Pistol’, individual informed security, which sought clarification and matter later closed.”

Tharoor himself took to Twitter and termed the media reports hilarious adding that he had never owned a pistol. Quoting the link to Aaj Tak story, Tharoor wrote, “This would be hilarious except that people might actually believe it: I have never owned a pistol or applied for a license, & I’ve certainly never carried one or been stopped for doing so. Our media’s talent for making up stories is literally unbelievable! (sic)”
