CAT triggers noon delays

Dum Dum: An equipment to reduce fog delays in the morning at Calcutta airport is now a contributing factor to flight delays in the afternoon.

Category III-B Instrument Landing System (CAT III-B ILS) was installed to prevent disruptions caused by fog.

But it also means maintaining more than 2,000 lights fixed on the main runway and taxiways, a crucial part of the system. This, along with an increase in rubber deposition because of a sharp rise in the number of flights, has forced the authorities to frequently close the main runway for hours during the day for maintenance.

Last Friday, an IndiGo flight from Bagdogra, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee on board, had to hover for 19 minutes before it could land.
