Gold worth Rs. 48 lakh seized from two air passengers in Madurai

Madurai: The officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs Department on Wednesday made two seizures of gold weighing more than 1.50 kg from two passengers who landed here from Malaysia and Dubai. The total worth of the gold seized is over Rs. 48 lakh.

Based on specific input, the AIU officials, led by Assistant Commissioner Venkatesh Babu, intercepted one Imran Khan from Chennai, who arrived here from Malaysia through Colombo by a SriLankan Airlines flight on Wednesday.

Imran Khan was carrying a microwave oven. The officials opened the new appliance and found that gold weighing 814.30 grams in rectangular shape was concealed inside its coil.

In the other case, the officials grew suspicious of the movement of a passenger, Abubakkar Siddique of Tiruchi. The officials seized a few speakers he was carrying, and when they opened them, they found six pieces of gold bars in cylindrical shape concealed inside the coil portion.

The gold bars weighed 750.80 grams.

The police said Siddique landed here by a SpiceJet flight from Dubai.
