Government plans to handover Air India to private entity by December 2018

New Delhi: The government today said that they aim to complete the privatisation of Air India and transfer the assets to a new private entity by December of this year, about five months before the Parliamentary elections to be held in 2019.

"The information memorandum will be out soon (in a couple of weeks). Plan is to call bids for four separate entities, which will be bid out simultaneously. We plan to decide on the winning bidder by June of this year and conclude the legal formalities (transferring the assets to the bidder) by December this year," aviation minister Jayant Sinha told reporters.

He added that the government has officially received interest from two entities on Air India - While one is IndiGo, the second one is a foreign airline that is not being named.

"A lot of interested party have also met us informally on the issue. We would not like to name anyone of them because the process, as you know, is confidential," said Sinha.
