High demand on regional routes pushes flight fares up

Chennai: Union finance minister Arun Jaitley may have wanted to promote the regional air connectivity scheme for those "who wear hawai chappals" while presenting the budget, but fares show only the well-heeled may be able to fly these routes for now.
One-way fares on direct flights from Chennai to Lucknow, Udaipur, Patna and Jaipur, a month in advance, have already crossed Rs 3,000-Rs 4,000, higher than to Mumbai and Delhi. Fares to Mangaluru, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada are in the Rs 1,800-Rs 2,000 range but are expected to climb in the coming days.
A one-way ticket to Chennai to Lucknow is Rs 3,848, while to Delhi it is Rs 2,800 for travel on March 8.
IndiGo, SpiceJet and Jet Airways have begun operating flights between Chennai and tier 2 and tier 3 cities to benefit from the regional connectivity scheme, which however doesn't cover most flights whose fare continues to be subjected to demand-supply fluctuations.
