Mumbai: Fifteen flights arriving or departing from Mumbai have been cancelled on Sunday as the main runway at the city airport will be shut during the day for maintenance. Three flights were cancelled on Saturday for the ongoing work.
The runway will remain closed from 10 am to 5 pm till February 17. This has led to a number of flights getting delayed between 35 minutes and 50 minutes apart from cancellations. Officials said the work involves maintenance of the Instrument Landing System, which provides radio signal navigation to the aircraft cockpit, giving the pilot guidance on landing.
While the airport has a secondary runway, which is being used for arrivals and departures, it cannot accommodate the entire load.
The disruption has prompted flyers to go for other modes of transport. "We had booked tickets on IndiGo from Mumbai to Vadodara for Sunday afternoon, but we were informed that the flight has been cancelled. We will travel by road as IndiGo informed that no other flights are available and that they refund the fare," said Rachana Mulay.
In a statement, IndiGo Airlines said, "Our flights cancelled today (Saturday) are two and 13 for tomorrow (Sunday) due to the ongoing issue."
