Tiruchi: The recent seizure of gold weighing over 850 grams allegedly smuggled by three passengers at the Tiruchi international airport was yet another instance in the long list of such illegal acts being reported at regular intervals.
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs which intercepted the trio who came by different foreign carriers from Singapore, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur found gold in small pieces concealed in mobile covers, wrist watches and even hair colour conditioners in a bid to avoid detection.
A day earlier, the AIU had confiscated gold weighing over half a kilogram from four overseas passengers.
The value of the seized yellow metals effected from seven passengers was nearly Rs. 45 lakh.
In the period from January to December 2017, the AIU, Tiruchi, had booked 256 cases of which smuggling of gold constituted the majority, according to Customs sources.
A two-fold rise was witnessed in respect of the number of smuggling cases registered last year by the AIU as compared to the corresponding period of 2016 when the number of such cases booked at the airport were 104 with the value of seized property being Rs. 11.77 crore, the sources said.
