Nobody likes rushing to the airport only to find out their flight is delayed. Google wants to help prevent this from happening.
The web giant has updated its Google Flights service with artificial intelligence-powered delay predictions. Google Flights already offers information about confirmed delays, but now, the service will also tell you about unconfirmed but likely holdups.
"Using historic flight status data, our machine learning algorithms can predict some delays even when this information isn't available from airlines yet," Google Flights Product Managers Anket Mathur and Grace Danciu wrote in a Wednesday blog post. Google will only show you forecasted delays when it's at least 80 percent confident about the prediction, they added.
Plus, Google Flights also now shows the reason for delays.
Before heading to the airport, just search Google for either your flight number or the airline and flight route (like, "Air New Zealand Auckland to Singapore"), and you'll see any expected delays right in your search results.
Meanwhile, Google Flights also now surfaces useful information about new budget ticket options some airlines are offering. These "basic economy" options might be wallet-friendly, Mathur and Danciu wrote, "but it can be confusing to understand whether important options—like overhead bin space, ability to select your seat, and baggage fees—are included in the fare."
