Defence authorities propose expansion of Kangra airport

Kangra: Former chief minister and BJP MP from Kangra Chamba Lok Sabha constituency Shanta Kumar on Sunday asserted expansion of the Kangra airport at Gaggal in the valley.
Kumar said defence ministry has gauged the strategical importance of the Kangra airport and submitted a proposal to the central government for granting permission for the expansion of Kangra airport to be used as a military airbase too.
He said that the defence airbase at Pathankot was close to the Pakistan border and was not safe strategically. He said that the proposal indicated that Kangra airport could prove most viable and strategically safe alternative to Pathankot airbase for days to come.
The BJP MP said that with the expansion of this airport it will be used both for the Indian Air Force as airbase and for the Airport Authority of India for civil operations. He said that this airport is at long distance from Pakistan border and strategically safe too. He said that the proposal was pending disposal with the central government and hoped that it will be approved in the national interest.
He said that in Himachal Pradesh only Kangra airport has chances of expansion and is strategically important too. He said that the defence ministry after due deliberations have moved the proposal in this direction.
Kangra Airport Director Sonum Narbo today told UNI that Airport Authority of India (AAI) will equip Kangra Airport with Doppler Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Radio Range (DVOR), which is a distance measuring equipment (DME), within three to four months to avoid cancellation and diversions of flights by 50 per cent. The DVOR will be installed at the cost of nearly Rs two crore, he added.
