3kg of cocaine seized from Portuguese national at Chennai airport

Chennai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized 3kg of cocaine, worth Rs 2.4 crore, from a Portuguese national at Chennai airport on Thursday. The smuggler had arrived in Chennai from Sao Paulo in Brazil via Dubai, an official statement from DRI said.
Both agencies were tight-lipped about the name and age of the accused, who was sent to Puzhal Central Prison after being arrested under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The drug was meant to be delivered at a hotel in Chennai.
The agencies received a specific tip off about the smuggling racket and were ready for the accused on Thursday morning. Though the accused denied carrying the drugs, he was questioned persistently and his check-in baggage was scanned.
When the baggage was opened, the officers found an electrical appliance in cardboard packing, which appeared to be a UPS. The device was opened to check the transformer portion which had a non-metallic core. Many layers of copper wire coils and adhesive tape were removed to recover six packets of cocaine weighing 3 kg, DRI said.
The accused made a voluntary statement that the cocaine had been given to him by an associate in Brazil to be delivered at a hotel in Chennai. He admitted to being a carrier, doing this job for a hefty pay packet.
Anyone carrying more than 100 gm of cocaine will get imprisonment for a period of 10-20 years with or without fine.
