In a relief to residents, Airport Authority to reduce extent of red zone

Thiruvananthapuram: In a big relief to thousands of city residents, who were caught in a tangle with the introduction of colour-coded zoning map (CCZM) for Trivandrum International Airport, the Airport Authority has agreed to reduce the extent of red zone in consultation with the city corporation. As per the rules of ministry of civil aviation, any constructions within the red zone area, marked in the CCZM, need to obtain mandatory NOC from AAI.
The decision is likely to benefit owners and residents of existing buildings in the red zone, which have been marked as unauthorized structures, as they are yet to submit the details for NOC to AAI. A specialized survey, ‘WGS 84’, done by authorized agencies, which is a costly affair, is mandatory for issuing NOC.
The AAI’s decision to reduce the extent of red zone, which extends to 20 wards of the corporation, follows a directive from Union minister for civil aviation Suresh Prabhu. The Union minister issued the directive based on a letter sent by Shashi Tharoor MP, to settle the confusion over the construction in colour-coded zones near Trivandrum International Airport and mentioned the delay in clearance for construction of buildings for the residents, including 2,103 beneficiaries of Pradhan Manthri Awas Yojana.
Suresh Prabhu in a tweet on Saturday said, “Have asked AAI authorities to look into the issue. We always proactively work with people to address their grievances.”
