AAI reduces red zone span for city

Thiruvananthapuram: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has reduced the span of the red zone in the Colour Coded Zoning Map for the city. Corporation authorities said the updated map shows the red zone as extending over 11 wards, most of them partially, compared to the 20 affected wards earlier.

The local body had raised the issue with the AAI, as many were facing difficulties following the restrictions imposed on construction in the red zone. The zoning map indicate the permissible height of buildings in the areas around the airport through different colour-coded grids.

As per the changes, the length of the red zone has been reduced from 11 kilometres to 6 kilometres. The width has been reduced from 4.5 kilometres to 1.5 kilometres. Earlier, out of the 20 affected wards, 10 were almost fully affected.

The 11 affected wards now will only be partially affected, according to Corporation officials.

In the yellow zone, which is located just outside the red zone, no objection certificate is not required for constructions up to 20 metres from the mean sea level. Above that height, NOC will be required.

“We have a few more objects to raise with the AAI. A discussion was held with the councillors. The various issues raised by them will be collected together and presented to the AAI. One of the requests will be for buildings that have been already completed to be given occupancy certificates without NOC. Another request is to provide exemption for single-storied houses or those with slopped roofs. The houses under the Pradhan Manthri Awaz Yoajana, LIFE (Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment) Mission and other government-sponsored projects also need to be exempted.
