AirAsia cancels four flights

Ranchi: AirAsia has decided to suspend two direct night flights from the capital city to Calcutta and Hyderabad and two morning flights to Bhubaneswar and Delhi from June 1, dealing a blow to the government's regional air connectivity scheme.

The Kaula Lampur-based Malaysian airline company conveyed the decision to Birsa Munda airport director Prabhat Kumar Garodia's office through a letter on Monday.

Divya Kumar, the company spokesperson in Mumbai, confirmed the development but said they would formally issue a communiqué soon.

"We are cancelling four flights from June 1. Night flights to Calcutta and Hyderabad will be suspended while morning flights to Bhubneshwar and Delhi will not ply. For the remaining destinations, change of timing is expected," an AirAsia official at Ranchi airport said, terming the decision as a purely business move.

After the cancellation, AirAsia will be left with three flights from Ranchi - Bengaluru (1.45pm), Calcutta (1.55pm) and Delhi (4.50pm).

Five airlines - AirAsia, Air India, IndiGo, GoAir, and Vistara - offer services from Ranchi to Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Patna.

A total of 25 flights operate daily from Ranchi airport.

Garodia confirmed receiving the letter.

"Flights will operate to other destinations as usual, but Ranchi's link with Bhubaneswar and Hyderabad will be disconnected for now at least," he said.

Sources said they were pinning hopes on a new entrant.
